AOL Feasting Margaret Jordan
18 " x 23 " Pastel on paperThis portrait hangs in my parents dining room. The handsome fellow is my maternal grandfather serving his family at a restaurant in Swtizerland. I believe they were on a tour of Europe in the early Fifties, 1952 to be exact.
Today I am highlighting Albert Osborn Linch because it is his birthday. He died when I was almost two; he was only 58. By all accounts he was an extremely hard worker and always went above and beyond the call of duty.
Just on Saturday I was quickly looking through a voluminous album of his pictures (apparently he loved taking photos) and ran across a commendation from a commanding officer on a hospital ship. Even tho' he was on his way back to the States after his tour in Africa (WWII) and not on duty, he operated on two passengers, performing life-saving procedures.
Thankfully, my mother is a fantastic artist, homemaker, historian, curator, and all-around remarkable woman. Her well-organized photo albums and artwork make it easy to learn about my heritage.
Not too many Christmases ago, my younger brother gave us a picture of AOL as an intern and standing in front of an ambulance. I'll try and post that later today. It was a very good present because he also told the story of how he ran across the photo while he himself was interning in an Atlanta hospital.
Are you still wondering what you can give as gifts this Christmas?

And Dan Fogelberg...I will always remember the winter I was preggers with Chris, waking up in the predawn chill to the radio on and hearing "Living Legacy". I not only see things wrong, Dana, I *hear* things wrong too. I remember mishearing "I am the living legacy to the leader of the band" and asking Curt: "do you know what a "living magazine" is?"
I loved his music...
giggle....I have done that very thing, Carol, when listening to music. Furthermore, as I am getting older, I find I have to listen more attentively to *hear* . Never mind trying to remember *what* I went upstairs to retrieve. Had to go back down and start over again...hoping the trigger will strike again.
Missed you.
Happy Monday!!
This pastel work is absolutely striking -- the light effects, the enjoyment in your grandfather's eyes, and the implicit welcome to the table -- what beautiful artto have in one's dining room!
I, too, note with sadness the passing of Dan Fogelberg.
Love the story of your grandfather!
I enjoyed Dan Fogelberg's music, too. I think one reason I like Michael Card's songs - apart from the great theology and doctrine in his lyrics - is that his voice sounds like Fogelberg's to me.
