There are these strange people called cousins, strange and  familiar at once, whose blood, nay, whose noses - exert a powerful claim on our duty and who, in their numbers and their crazy variety and their blissful being-themselves, place you within a community whether you like it or not and remind you that you are not the most important person in the world.

In one short week we will be gathering at Callaway Gardens for our annual family reunion.  There will be no fewer that fifty-five people at our opening barbeque.  AND we're missing at least a dozen cousins   Here's a link to a recap of last year's festivities.

Here's the link to this interesting article by Esolen in which he describes that wonderful bond between cousins and how "we learn from them who have to like us, even when they dont."  It was originally published in Touchstone Magazine in 2006.

While I have *only* seven first cousins, I am tickled beyond measure that my children have 28.  My father had over 60!

How many first cousins do you have?

    Do you know them?

Tell me a story about one of them

Or if s/he had a favorite color.

  • I love that quote about cousins.  My sister and I didn't get cousins until we were in our teens, well, at least I was in my teens.  Now we have 6.  I still can't help but think of them as babies, but, actually, they're all grown with babies of their own. My husband on the other hand grew up with heaps and heaps of cousins that all lived nearby.  My sister and I have tried to build the cousin concept into our children, and even though there is a wide age gap between most of them, the younger ones are pretty close.  My favorite story is when my second son and his cousin got treed by a sheep.  Yes, a sheep.   We went out to call them in for dinner, and low and behold, two frantic kids were stuck in a tree with the sheep standing at the bottom bleating away.
  • I wish we could make it this year! Darcy is going to get another cousin in the next couple of weeks. It's weird (and fun) being on the adult side of growing families.
  • @DrunkwithJoy - we will miss you, Lindsey.  Your Darcy is bound to have dozens of cousins.  It will warm your heart

  • @Btolly - Bonnie, that's hilarious!  Thanks soooo much for sharing a story.

  • I have 19 first cousins. My dad had over 30. Yes, I know them all. We have family reunions every 5 years or so on my father's side of the family, and every Christmas my mother's side of the family gets together, but I would love to have an annual get-together like the one you enjoy at Callaway Gardens.

When I was 5, my cousin Alex, who is 7 months younger than I am, dared me to eat a kernel of corn from the ornamental wreath of dried Indian corn and peppers that our grandmother had in her formal living room. He pinched off the kernel and I popped it in my mouth only to feel a fire raging on my tongue. I screamed and cried, my mother came running and Mae, Grandmother's "help," rushed a glass of cold water to me. I couldn't understand why the corn was so hot - then Alex confessed that he'd actually pinched off the end of a pepper and given that to me to eat. Lesson learned!
