  • Ten Lies Ten Truths

Annually the back-to-school activities (new classes) have sparked lively conversations at our house.  From topics in science class to a New Testament religion class, we have covered the gamut of controversies.  And this year is no different as DD#4 is taking Ethics.

While her teacher is using documentary films on various topics *chosen* by the students from her (rarified) list to spark discussion, they are covering some standard ethical dilemmas: drugs, poverty, torture, abortion, atomic energy, et cetera.  I truly enjoy hearing about this class.

But it made me run downstairs to the basement in search of a book I knew I had somewhere.....

Ah, yes!  Ten Lies Ten Truths:Stories Illuminating America Today by Parker Hudson.  I commend it to your attention, as in a very entertaining way, Mr Hudson addresses the ethical questions confronting our society's belief system.  The ten chapters tell stories about Evolution, History (revisionism), Abortion, God (Allah), Absolutes, Character, Marriage, Statism, p*rn*graphy, and Family.  In the space of just a few pages, the reader is forced to question what he knows - or thinks he knows - and is challenged to learn the truth.

Learn more about Parker Hudson at his website here.

I have read his other books, The President and On the Edge, both of which I recommend.

And for the sake of reference, he reads Randy Alcorn

  • The extra, at-home dialogue on ethics is sure to have a sharpening effect on your daughter. I had not heard of the Hudson book~~sounds interesting. And Randy Alcorn is an author I very much appreciate. My favorites were _Safely Home_ and _Heaven_.

  • Sounds good. I love the discussions around the dinner table. My husband is better than me at challenging our kids to really think through the issues.
