Commencement
It's that time of year again.
The merry month of May is typically busier than December. Between recitals, graduations, end-of-the-year parties, and the beginning-of-wedding-season events, there is nary a free weekend. There must be a nack for negotiating all the details: packing, parking, seating... uhmmm - *hearing!!*
Former Attorney General Ed Meese is addressing Hillsdale College's graduates, so I'm looking for a chair close to the amplifiers. In light of the recent announcements of Preston Smith (GA State Senator-Rome) and Charlie Crist (FL Governer) to run for state attorneys general, I think I better start paying more attention to these public officials.
Forbes Magazine this week posts a list of graduation leadership speakers.
Here's a link to the article.
Who's addressing your graduate?

Graduation requirements have changed, huh?

On the same day 800 miles from Hillsdale, Alton Brown addressed the graduates of the University of Georgia....http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/050910/new_636709975.shtml

I'm amused by your photo. My daughter, Kiernan, just graduated from Hillsdale. While I would have loved for graduation to be on such a beautiful day, it was not to be. It was freezing cold and rainy, so graduation took place in the sports complex. Not pretty or comfortable (we sat on risers). Dr. Kalthoff (pictured) was not on the stage - no longer holding the position of handing the graduates their diplomas. Ed Meese, while a truly wonderful man (and we are in agreement with him politically, did not give a great speech. We were disappointed. But our daughter graduated as one of the top ten academic scholars in a class of 332, summa cum laude, with an English degree (classics minor), and we are pleased with her.
@thedoorinthywall - I was there too, indoors on the back bleachers, as DD#3 graduated (1 of 2 female biochem majors), and heard the same speeches. The best thing about Atty Gen Meese's address is that it was short I did not mean to mislead by using this photo from 2008 when DD#2 graduated. We look forward to a May 2012 graduation for DD#4. The weather is always unpredictable, but Hillsdale College's reputation is consistent and solid. Hope to meet you there sometime!
Oh, it just amused me. Congrats to you, too. Our daughter had some of the most wonderful, top-notch, stellar professors and for that we are truly thankful. We were not, however, as impressed with the administration. I almost fell off my seat when Dr. Arnn said (in his speech) that he *coined* the term "warrior poets." I worry that they are not as committed to the liberal arts as they have been in the past. Our DD#2 is heading south to the University of Dallas on a full-tuition.
